IPPC – International Plant Protection Convention

Why do we need to treat wooden pallets? We care about the Earth. IPPC is an international convention that was signed on 6 December 1951 in Rome and has been in force since 3 April 1952. It is the international standard for plant health. Its basic aim is the protection of natural flora and plant products against the spreading of pests from another countries (pests can be transported by containers, packaging materials, etc. in international trade).

One result of the convention is the ISPM 15 standard = International Standards For Phytosanitary Measures No. 15.

All wooden materials of a thickness greater than 6mm, which are used for shipping goods between countries, have to be treated by fumigation or heat treatment against the spreading of disease and insects, which can affect ecosystems.

What does fumigation mean?

Fumigation is a method for protecting wooden materials against pests by gas. This type of treatment of wooden materials is forbidden in many countries.

What does heat treatment mean?

Heat treatment makes timber more durable against pests and insects. It is done based on exact timings and temperature ranges.
